We held our chapter meeting on Thursday evening. The minutes and a few photos for the meeting follow below. We also did our March fly out to Eloy on Friday morning. We all had a great time eating and watching all of the parachute jumping. It was a gorgeous day for both.
EAA Chapter 810 Meeting - March 5, 2020 - Ken Rice’s Hangar
Meeting is called to order at 6:30 pm. Officers present include Tom West, President; Ken Rice, Vice President; David Wilcox, Treasurer and John Trautschold, Secretary.
Officers start by introducing themselves. The rest of the members also introduce themselves.
Tom talks about:
- The Ray Aviation Scholarship - we applied but just missed the cut by a couple of positions. We’ll keep trying or if they get more funding we still may qualify this year.
- We still are interested in getting kids involved in the EAA RC Modeling the program. We are looking for a volunteer to head this up. Dale M. works with the Boy Scouts so hopefully he can get something going with them.
- Fly out tomorrow (Friday) is to Eloy. Caution - they do a lot of sky diving there.
- Steve Vaught is planning on Young Eagles event in spring.
Ken Rice starts his presentation on his military career - showing video of the jets he was flying. He was flying T38s in these movies.
Ken started to look into building an airplane years ago. He visited the Lancair factory and they said he could build a day VFR airplane for $28,000. Of course, that didn’t include the engine and avionics, etc. By the time he did the math it would cost 60,000. He shows a picture of the kit before it is assembled. He decided to do a one week factory prebuild. Donna (his wife) and his mother and father in-law also came down to help with the prebuilt. He show more photos of the tail and wing subassemblies that still need to be skinned. Ken thinks he spent at least 4000 hours doing body work on the airplane. The end result is spectacular though!
Ken installed an VPX in the Legacy. He shows a demo video that explains how it works.
We all thank Ken for his excellent presentation.
Meeting adjourned at 7:45 pm
Respectfully submitted:
John Trautschold
